Transcribed diary, 1864, 1899.

Transcribed diary of William Brayton Chase, an ambulance driver in Company A, 21st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The diary contains brief entries from July-December 1864 that followed the progress of his unit marching with General William Sherman through Georgia, from Atlanta to Savannah. The entries generally began with a short description of the weather and ended with a statement of God's protection of and mercy toward the regiment. In between were short descriptions of actions, often mentioning heavy fighting, men in the company being killed, and his movements to and from the front. Early September and mid-December entries mention the taking of Atlanta and Savannah, respectively. The final part of the diary covered Chase's post-war life in his hometown of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin from April to August 1899. Entries are similar with descriptions of the weather, Chase's health, and some activities such as buying a house. Also included in the collection is a short biographical sketch of Chase by his descendant, Clifford Chase.
